Video SEO in 2026: How to Make Your Brand Videos Findable in Google and AI Search

Most marketing teams still treat video as something that lives inside a campaign. You commission a brand video, run it as paid social, embed it on a landing page, and move on. In 2026 that leaves a large amount of value on the table, because video has quietly become one of the strongest signals for how your brand shows up in Google and in AI answer engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews.

We have produced video for Sydney and national brands for more than 18 years, and the change we have seen in the last two years is not about cameras. It is about what happens to a video after delivery. Below is a practical guide to making your video work in search, written for marketing managers who have to justify the investment beyond view counts.

Does video actually help SEO in 2026?

Yes, but not in the way most people assume. Video rarely ranks a page on its own. What it does is increase the chance a page is surfaced and cited, because it adds depth, dwell time and machine-readable text that answers questions directly.

Three things matter here:

  • Time on page. A well-placed 60 to 90 second explainer video keeps visitors on a page long enough to signal that the page satisfied the query.

  • Text supply. A transcript turns a two minute video into 300 to 400 words of specific, quotable language that search engines and AI models can index.

  • Multi-surface presence. The same footage appears on your site, on YouTube, in Reels and in paid social, so your brand shows up repeatedly for the same intent.

If you take one thing from this article: search engines cannot watch your video, so the words around your video decide whether it earns you visibility.

How do AI answer engines use video?

AI answer engines pull from text, structured data and transcripts, then cite the sources they consider authoritative. Video helps you get cited in two ways: it supplies clear, first-party explanations in your own words, and it proves that a real organisation with real people stands behind the claim.

This is why we now advise clients to script differently. If a section of your video answers a question in one clean sentence, that sentence can be lifted directly into an AI answer. Vague brand language cannot. "We help businesses unlock their potential" gives a model nothing. "Our compliance audit takes four weeks and covers 40 control points" is citable.

What that means for your script

  • Ask a real question on screen, then answer it in the first two sentences of the segment.

  • Use specific numbers, timeframes and named processes rather than adjectives.

  • Include your category and location naturally in speech, not just in the description.

  • Avoid burying the answer behind 30 seconds of drone footage and music.

We build this into scripting for explainer videos, case study videos and corporate video work, because it costs nothing extra at the writing stage and it is expensive to retrofit later.

What technical steps make a video findable?

The technical checklist is short and most of it is a one-off setup on your website, not a per-video cost. Here is what we recommend:

  • Full transcript on the page. Publish it as visible text, not a downloadable file. This is the single highest-value step.

  • Burned-in or uploaded captions. Around 80 percent of social video is watched without sound, and captions also feed platform indexing.

  • VideoObject schema. Structured data telling search engines the title, description, duration, thumbnail and upload date of the video on that page.

  • Chapters and timestamps. These let both viewers and AI systems jump to the segment that answers a specific question.

  • A descriptive file name and title. "brand-video-final-v7.mp4" tells a search engine nothing.

  • Fast, self-hosted or embedded playback. A video that slows a page to a crawl undoes the SEO benefit it was meant to create.

  • One primary page per video. Pick the page you want to rank and embed the video there first.

If your web team can only do two of these, choose the transcript and the schema.

Should the video live on YouTube or on our own site?

Both, with different jobs. YouTube is a search engine in its own right and a source AI systems draw on, so it is where discovery happens. Your own site is where conversion happens and where you control the surrounding content.

Our usual recommendation for enterprise clients is to publish the video on YouTube with a proper title, description and chapters, then embed that same video on a dedicated page on your site with the transcript, a clear heading structure and a call to action. You get the discovery benefit without splitting your authority across two locations.

Which types of video earn the most search value?

Videos that answer questions outperform videos that describe a company. In our experience the order of search value looks like this:

1. Explainer videos. They map directly onto "how does X work" and "what is X" queries, which are exactly the queries AI answer engines are built to serve.

2. Case study videos. They capture problem, approach and result, which is the structure buyers and models both look for as evidence.

3. Testimonial videos. They supply third-party language and credibility signals that no amount of copywriting can fake.

4. Product and process video, including 2D and 3D animation. Animation lets you show what cannot be filmed, such as internal mechanisms, data flows or manufacturing sequences.

5. Brand video. Essential for positioning and paid campaigns, but usually the weakest direct search performer because it is emotional rather than informational.

Pre-roll video for paid social and television commercials sit outside this list on purpose. They buy attention rather than earn it. They are still the right choice when you need reach fast, and the smartest budgets use both: paid formats for reach, question-led formats for compounding search visibility.

How much extra does search-optimised video cost?

Very little, if it is planned at the start. Transcripts, captions and chaptered exports are usually a small line item on a production, often in the low hundreds of dollars rather than thousands. The real cost is retrofitting: recutting a finished video because the answer to the key question was never said out loud on camera.

That is why we ask two questions in every kickoff meeting. First, what question should this video answer for someone who has never heard of you? Second, which page on your site do you want this video to help rank? If the answers are clear, the search value comes almost free with the production.

What should you stop doing?

A few habits reliably waste search value:

  • Publishing video with no transcript or on-page text around it.

  • Using a single 4 minute brand film as the only video asset for a whole year.

  • Hosting the video only in a social platform that search engines cannot index well.

  • Letting stock-heavy, AI-generated filler dilute a library that should demonstrate genuine expertise. Volume without credibility is now easy to produce, so it no longer signals much.

  • Measuring only views. Track assisted conversions, page rankings and how often your brand appears in AI answers for your category.

Bottom Line

Video SEO in 2026 is less about the camera and more about clarity. Search engines and AI models cannot watch your footage, so they rely on transcripts, captions, structured data and the specific sentences your people actually say on screen. Brands that script their videos to answer real questions, publish them with full text and schema, and pair them with paid formats for reach get compounding visibility rather than a one-off spike.
